Underage girls jump woman over karaoke performance
Posted on 09/24/2009
By CHASE WRIGHT Times Staff Writer STAMFORD -- Police arrested six underage girls Wednesday who were drinking at a downtown Stamford bar, after they allegedly jumped a woman because of her poor karaoke performance, a department spokesperson said. The victim, described as a Hispanic, 25-year-old Port Chester, N.Y. resident, suffered a chipped tooth and numerous bruises. She was treated and released from Stamford Hospital. The incident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Bobby Valentine's Sports Gallery Cafe on Main Street, said Lt. Sean Cooney, Stamford police spokesman. As the victim sang to the tune of a Spanish song on karaoke, she endured the constant heckling of six girls, one of whom shouted particularly derogatory remarks regarding her poor performance on the microphone, Cooney said. The victim shot back something to the effect of, 'If you don't like it, you can leave,' he said, which the girls took exception to. "After that, the fight was on," Cooney said. The six girls immediately rushed the victim, knocking her to the floor, and then proceeded to stop, punch and pull her hair, he said. With the help of a bartender and other patrons, the victim's husband managed to pull the girls off and push them out the door, Cooney said. As the girls left, they continued to shout obscenities and hurl glass bottles into the crowd, he said. Several witnesses followed the girls as they walked down Washington Boulevard and pointed them out to responding officers, who arrested them near the intersection of Tresser Boulevard without incident, police said. The girls -- Kiana Strickland, 20, of 49 Durant St. in Stamford, Martisa Chambers, 19, of 56 Suncrest Rd. in Norwalk, Danielle Swanson, 19, of 8 Fort Point St. in Norwalk, Deja Hines, 19 of 53 Clinton Ave. in Stamford, Michelle Rosedom, 19, of 233 Fairfield Ave. in Stamford and Chaniel McRae, 20, of 84 Fort Point St. in Norwalk -- were all charged with assault in the third-degree, conspiracy to commit assault in the third-degree and breach of peace. They were all released on $500 bond and are due in court Oct. 5. The Stamford Police Department plans to refer the incident at Bobby Valentine's to the Connecticut Liquor Control Commission because the underage girls shouldn't have been in the bar in the first place, Cooney said.
